Dear Editor:
I'm trying to understand what possible motivation you may have had for publishing that vile cartoon depicting the shooting of the chimpanzee that went crazy. I guess you thought it would be funny to suggest that whomever was responsible for writing the Economic Recovery legislation must have the intelligence and judgment of a deranged, violent chimpanzee, and should be shot to protect the larger community. Really? Did it occur to you that this suggestion would imply a connection between President Barack Obama and the deranged chimpanzee? Did it occur to you that our President has been receiving death threats since early in his candidacy? Did it occur to you that blacks have historically been compared to various apes as a way of racist insult and mockery? Did you intend to invoke these painful themes when you printed the cartoon?
If that's not what you intended, then it was stupid and willfully ignorant of you not to connect these easily connectable dots. If it is what you intended, then you obviously wanted to be grossly provocative, racist and offensive to the sensibilities of most reasonable Americans. Either way, you should not have printed this cartoon, and the fact that you did is truly reprehensible. I can't imagine what possible justification you have for this. I've read your lame statement in response to the outrage you provoked. Shame on you for dodging the real issue and then using the letter as an opportunity to attack Rev. Sharpton. This is not about Rev. Sharpton. It's about the cartoon being blatantly racist and offensive.
I believe in freedom of speech, and you have every right to print what you want. But freedom of speech still comes with responsibilities and consequences. You are responsible for printing this cartoon, and I hope you experience some real consequences for it. I'm personally boycotting your paper and won't do any interviews with any of your reporters, and I encourage all of my colleagues in the entertainment business to do so as well. I implore your advertisers to seriously reconsider their business relationships with you as well.
You should print an apology in your paper acknowledging that this cartoon was ignorant, offensive and racist and should not have been printed.
I'm well aware of our country's history of racism and violence, but I truly believe we are better than this filth. As we attempt to rise above our difficult past and look toward a better future, we don't need the New York Post to resurrect the images of Jim Crow to deride the new administration and put black folks in our place. Please feel free to criticize and honestly evaluate our new President, but do so without the incendiary images and rhetoric.
Sincerely,
John Legend

These divissive practices are tearing our country even further apart when we need unity the most.
I think that we have indeed become an overly sensitive world. I mean Miley Cyrus getting sued because of making a silly face with squinty eyes has now been a racist attempt towards Asians? I mean she was being a silly girl with her silly friends. But....I do agree that a huge force such as NY Post should of had someone on their staff stand back and say, "Wait a minute, this may be misconstrued." It seems a little odd that they didn't think first. I think they should issue a public apology. They should hold some responsibility for their badly chosen peice of work. You will always offend someone, and that is the price you pay for free speech. But racial humor is unacceptable from such a distinguished peice of "journalism"....I think that it should be unacceptable anywhere but corporations should have an even bigger responsibility in this effort of spreading good will towards our fellow mankind. As a white woman, I find the cartoon offensive, so I don't know how anyone could of missed it. I mean if they wanted to potray an idiot for the stimulus bill, they couldn't use a rock? I mean chimps are actually pretty smart in the scheme of things. But at any rate...I am just sooo sick of arguing that my views as if they are opinion. What's right is what's right. Like being humane is a liberal notion. I am sick and tired of us being crappy towards eachother, and because I pose the "why can't we all just get along" I am labeled as having some freak hippy ideology. being civil to one another is the right thing to do. taking care of those who cant take care of themselves is the right thing to do. being selfish and worrying about your pockets only is the wrong way to be. Being raciast is divissive and further breaks our country apart. It is uneducated, and simple-minded to live like that. Environment is no longer an excuse. My dad is a bigot and he produced three intelligent and well rounded daughters who all three have a multitude of friends from EVERY racial demographic. It sickens me taht people still hold these believes close to heart, that it is ok to liken someone to a monkey, sambo, picaninny, aunt jemima, coon, and other racially charged characters are no longer acceptable..(they never were)...Can we stop hurting eachother and start working together?
Great Response
Great response. I'm personally going to join you in boycotting the New York Post. This is unacceptable. The United States has a fragile racial history, displaying something like that is wrong, offensive, and racist by any measure.
Thank U 4 Standing Up!
I heard about protestors on the news and then saw the Post cartoon you are talking about. It is very insulting and racist! I feel sad and angry that they had to resort to something like that. I know Rupert Murdoch is the owner of the Post and he has a history of being "Racist". I can't stand him or Fox news. I applaud you for your letter to the editor and know that the majority of us share your views. The Post needs to receive a backlash for this nonsense. A boycott is definitely called for. Thank you for sharing, informing and for especially for standing up! - Love, Angie
I COMMEND YOU JOHN!!
I think it's admirable that you, as an artist, chose to speak out instead of sitting by quietly!! I'm sure that it is difficult, in your position, to voice your opinion, especially in matters that may be controversial, but we, as a people, can NOT sit back and let this type of racial intolerance be ignored!! Clearly this cartoonist AND editor were aware of the racial significance that this chimp had to African Americans and the result was nothing more than a blatant, grossly ignorant attempt to demean our current President. It is an insult to the hard work and intelligence of President Obama and his stimulus bill and the cartoon should not have ever made it to the pages of a paper that has any reverence for its reputation.
As an attorney, I am intimately familiar with the freedom we were given to express our opinions...HOWEVER, legality is not synonymous with good taste and certain things are just plain disgusting!!
I love that, despite the fame and Grammys, you are still who you are and stand up for what you believe in!!
Keep up the good work.....and good music!!
Sherri
GO JOHN
Thanks
Thanks John. You speak for so many of us on the vile cartoon posted in the New York post. Continue to keep hope alive in word and music. Much love!
RIGHT ON JOHN!!!
Well said. You are a wonderful humanitarian and intellect. You are a true voice of the people and can speak for me anytime.
Love Jackie
Way to go!
You tell them John! I feel the same way that you do. The New York Post should be held accountable for what they choose to print, and they need to lose the excuses.
I am glad that you (as a celebrity) decided to speak up about this, and I hope that others will follow your lead. Thanks for supporting our president and the people.
WOW!
JL, YOU SAID THAT MY BROTHA!
Well done ...
You, Mr. Legend, can certainly pen a letter.
Thank you for living the lyric and 'being the change' that we all wish to see in the world...
With Love & Respect ~
Angel
Thank You!
I just had to post a thank you Mr. Legend. Your open letter captured perfectly every thought and feeling I too have of the New York Post's poor taste in humor. I firmly agree that advertisers and consumers must hold them accountable for their complete lack of responsible journalism.
May God Bless You and our President.
Regards,
MissM
Thank You
John, I am really impressed with your stern words of fact that you have written to a paper who deserves me not to say their name. As we a people of all ethic backgrounds evolve from what was, I encourage you to continue to use your voice as I will use mine to speak out and loud on all things that will depict any person or people in a negative light. Thanks so much for the music. When I listen to your music, I am able to feel the words as they touch me gently and peacefully. They lift my soul and scream to my heart. I have many stresses in my life; however, I am able to refocus after listening to any one of your songs. I like Green Light. Thank you for all you have done, that you do and what you will do in the future.
Thank You
John thank you so much for your letter. I am so glad that someone in your position spoke up about the Posts sorry excuse.
?
Lets focus on the positive and not the negative. Throwing wood into the file will only create a blaze! Who knows what was really intended w/that cartoon, let's move on!
In strong agreement!
You said it all! They knew it wasn't right! Just proves that even some educated people are still IGNORANT! Shame on them! I back you 100% percent. We stand behind you and the President! Protest.. hurt in the pocket book!
Right on, John
Mr. Legend, you are so dead on! You expressed exactly how I was feeling. I am so behind you on boycotting that garbage of a newspaper. I agree people have the right to express themselves, but there should be zero tolerance for ignorance and prejudices. Hopefully you will get enough of your friends and colleages together and do something about that sorry excuse for a paper.
If there's anything that any of us can do, let me know and I"ll certainly do my part in taking this newspaper down.
Take care
Kimberley
New York Post Resp.
What I must say is, I'm so happy to have you speak out. I was quite disturbed by that also.
This blog completely spoke the exact words I thought.
Thanks John Legend.
You are truely amazing.
GOOD FOR YOU, JOHN!!!
Hey, JL. I am in total agreement. I cannot believe that such an offensive cartoon even made it past the editor’s desk (shame on you Col Allen!!). I know President Obama was not the author of the bill, but most people are not aware of that fact. It appears that whoever is responsible for the cartoon wanted to push the envelope as far as they could. Even if their intent was to take a jab at the Democratic Party, or Congress as a whole, the explanation given did not dispel the fact that they were inferring that the President is incompetent, as he did sign the bill. It was in very poor taste to print a cartoon like that and say that it was a parody of a headline (Chimp attacks…) What about that lady’s family? There is no compassion. The editor should have used better judgment when deciding whether to publish the cartoon. Here we are- a nation in financial crisis, jobless numbers off the scale, millions of Americans losing their homes… (I could go on-), and this is the only cartoon the cartoonist could think of; an insult to the President? President Obama has done more, in his first few weeks, than “W” did for his last 2 years in office. At least the stimulus package is an attempt to get the country back on track. I would like to know what is so “inept” about the writing of the bill. I’ve read several comments by critics of the bill, but not one of them has expounded on the reason(s) for their opposition, nor have they presented a feasible alternative. It (stimulus package) was not meant to be a fix-all, but merely a way to get the economy going. While watching GMA this morning, I was amazed as one “middle class” couple was interviewed. They actually stated that they were against the package because “it doesn’t offer anything (in the form of mortgage bailout) for us….because we’ve been able to pay our mortgage”….Hello, that’s a blessing!! They should be thanking God instead of complaining. The whole point of a bailout is to help those in need…. Wake up, people!!
), in an attempt to hide the true meaning of the cartoon. - It didn’t work!!!!
Back to the cartoon.
The editor, offered a poor attempt at an apology, but it was actually another slap in the face (this time with the back of the hand). His says he apologizes “to those who were offended by the image” but he won’t apologize to “critics of the cartoon” (I may be missing something, but if one is offended, would they not also be a critic?...I guess you’d have to voice your displeasure to be a critic…Well I’m voicing mine now!!) … Is he serious?...The picture without the words is just that-a picture. The trouble began with the caption. When the words were added, the picture was no longer just a monkey lying dead (of multiple bullet wounds, mind you) with two cops standing over him with guns in their hands…With the caption, the cartoon became a reminder, not only of Jim Crow, but also of racial symbolism (apes/ blacks) and the one thing many of us (African- Americans), especially young males, encounter on a regular basis, police brutality. They chose their wording carefully (I’m sure “sign” was replaced by “write” at some point
This cartoon is a prime example of the types of things Attorney General Holder spoke about during his speech (this was also a hot topic on the news channels today, and the timing couldn’t have been better!!!). He hit the nail on the head! We are a nation of cowards when it comes to race relations. I found it so disturbing that instead of praising him in his efforts to unite us, the journalists kept asking “do you think “coward” is too strong of a word?” What?! They totally missed the message he was trying to convey. Had the cartoonist been aware of the things that African-Americans have endured throughout history, he may have been able to view this from an African-American perspective and he would not have associated this cartoon with President Obama in any way. I hope we all can learn something from this. I applaud you for taking a stand!! I'm standing with you on this one!!
Peace,
Tara
Your remarkable comments on the Post cartoon
Thank you sir.
My apologies for knowing nothing of you prior to reading your response to the now notorious Post cartoon. The explanation for my ignorance is a long story ... and entirely irrelevant to the purpose of this note.
My purpose is simple:
Thank you for your extraordinarily articulate condemation of this cartoon.

New York Post
John ,
I have to completely agree with your remarks on the cartoon that was published. I was truly disgusted that they would even make the comparsion it is only out of true ignorance and it comes to show how small minded some people still are. I live in Orange County which is a Republican County but originally from Los Angeles and I have to say when Obama won the presidency it gave me a new hope and the strenght to go to law school despite what so many have told me that I wouldn't make it. I was on a high the day he won and the following day at school I was disgusted about the remarks people said in my classrooms I have to say I got in quite a few arguments that day . Then when this cartoon came out many people laughed and said it was true and Obama comes from deranged chimpanzees. I am thankful to have someone like you a public figure willing to speak up when things are not right ...and I understand people are pissed off with this whole economic crisis going on but and don't believe he can accomplish it because of the color of his skin. All I have to say you may not always have a place tol ay your head but you always have a place to pray. I don't believe in distiguishing people by color it should be by character and Obama is the hope we ahve been praying the past 8 years.
Thanks for Your Courage,
Monica
Please Reply Would like some Feedback, I deal with ignorant people like this everyday, Sometimes I don't know If I should stay quite or should I always have soemthing to shoot back at them
An Apology Surfaces (they musta heard about your boycott.....!)
A Half-assed, apology, that is. Basically the Post explained their lack of culpability, and included that damned line I ALWAYS hate whenever I hear a public apology: "IF IT OFFENDED YOU, (we) apologize."
IF???
Public apologies should be across the board. NOT just to those whom it offended.
Even if it DIDN'T offend someone, THEY should be apologized to as well!
Because by not apologizing to those who took NO offense by the action in question, said action will be eternally excused.
Another case in point was when Justin Timberlake apologized for his part in the infamous 'wardrobe malfuncion'. He said to the public something like: "if it offended you, I apologize."
No, that's not acceptable. You should apologize. Period. And NOT just to those who were offended by it. To everyone. Because if you direct your apology ONLY to those who were offended by an action, it creates an atmosphere that THEY are the ones at fault, for having been so sensitive as to have been offended.
Anyway, here's a copy of the NY Post's quite defensive apology:
"Wednesday's Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.
It shows two police officers standing over the chimp's body: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.
It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.
Period.
But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.
This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.
However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.
To them, no apology is due.
Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else."
Great reaction.
I live in France, and when I heard about this news, I was completely shocked by this insultant cartoon, and even more by the arrogant response from the New York Post. You exactly put into words everything that passed through my mind when I heard this, and I don't think I'm the only one. Thank you for that. Peace, Na.
ny post editorial cartoon
John. Just saw your reply on CNN. Thought you nailed it - and without stooping to the reckless ugliness the cartoonist obviously deserved. I guess our President has reminded us all that taking the higher ground beats taking 'the bait' every time. Nicely done, John. Oh - and have a great time visiting our here...
Brad Isaacs
Los Angeles
P.S. Your Sunday Lincoln Memorial performance with James Taylor sent shivers up the ol' spine. The whole concert was beautiful. And how smart is our President to have Garth Brooks - arguably the only performer whose fan base did not vote Democratic - sing those three songs. C'mon, Garth Brooks doing the Animal House version of 'Shout'... now that's brillliant.
P.P.S. The only downside to losing Bush is that it will probably be the last opportunity in our lifetime to say with absolute certainty that we're acutally smarter than the president. But I think we can live with that. You take care...
All together.
That is really lamentable, very sad to see that things as these still they happen is horrible to see civilized people using a media with as much irresponsibility and ignorance. I find that they would have to ask for excuses to the world for so great dullness.
Taken care, kisses here of Brazil!
Thank you for your voice of courage
Dear John:
The only reason I logged on to your site is to say "Thank you!" As Dr. King said, "all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing." I realize that you have taken a profound risk in your career in the midst of those who hide under the guise of "artistic license." You have named evil for what it is--evil. In the midst of legitimate differences of opinions in our nation as we seek to dialogue in the midst of disagreement there are times that we must say, "Enough." Thank you for living what I presume to be what you believe. I am a white pastor and am grateful for your voice of courage.
In Christ's Peace, Ruth
...
Amazing. I hadn't heard about it before I saw your post on Myspace last night. I looked up the cartoon and was appalled. My mouth literally dropped open when the cartoon showed up on my screen and made my friend, Erin, get to the computer immediately...she was disgusted. It's great you've sent this letter to them. I'm sure it will be noticed and definitely hope so!
Lots of Love,
Lindsay
Thank You~
for putting to word what my mouth cannot express...
Way to go John!
Thank you!
A blatant lack of respect
Whatever happened to respect for the President? What happened to the days when just being in that Office commanded respect?
I understand the Office took plenty of respect hits from our last President but there is still a level of respect due to the Office and the man who holds it.
As an African American, I found the shooting of the chimpanzee by police officers especially offensive given the state of poor relations between the African American community and law enforcement. The implication that it takes police officers to shoot African American men to stop them is vile.
As a die-hard Republican, I disagree with most of the Economic Recovery legislation since it seems like nothing but a huge pile of socialism wrapped around a few useful programs for the average working person. However, I would never use such a historically racially charge symbol and violence to express my discontent.
What was even more insulting was that “apology” the NY Post printed. They can keep their apology because what they did was unacceptable.
I am all for freedom of speech and rhetoric to express discontent with the Economic Recovery legislation but I am more into respect for the President, the office of the Presidency and racial tolerance.
Thank you for your insightful and respectful letter to the Editor, Mr. Legend.
Thank you!
Way to go John Legend! Finally, a celebrity that is not afraid to speak up. I commend your response to the NY Post's inappropriate, reprehensible, and totally unacceptable cartoon. I won't call any names, but I wonder where are the other (celebrity) voices?
Your open letter
Where did your education system fail you. Perhaps you missed the point that the president can't write a bill, he can only sign or veto it. So where did you get the idea that it had anything to do with Obama (Whom I support). Ignorent idiots like you unravel the work of years of people fighting opression by making the black comminuty look like an ignorant bunch of whiners.
You should print an apology in your blog acknowledging that this letter was ignorant, offensive and racist and should not have been printed.
Thanks, John. We need your voice.
I hope the boycott gains momentum and forces the Post to acknowledge their mistakes. I am a blogger who just today was offered an opportunity for promotion by the Post. I had to turn them down and tell them that I have joined the boycott. It'll hurt a little bit financially, but I don't want that kind of money.
Very well said
Hey Mr. Legend
I just joined your blog... I'm a 31 yo male from BK, NY. lolol Just thought you wanted to know that. Keep up the good work pop!
this is what I emailed to the editor.....
If you didn't use that caption you would not be under all this racism accusations.
Someone was really injured by the chimp, I'm pretty sure that your paper covered the story but now all the attention is away from the women that was brutally beaten. She has lost her eyes nose and other body parts. Where is the sympathy and respect for the victim and the owner who had to beat the chimp off her best friend.
This was in very bad taste. I will NEVER buy your paper again.
The front page of your paper says 2.5 million readers everyday or something like that... it will drop significantly.
You have young inquisitive readers who will wonder why you used that caption and someone will explain to them the history behind the African American being called a monkey.
Indirectly your still promoting racism during these trying times when everyone needs to work together and become one.
The stimulus plan was created for individuals like your self and others to keep their job and the economy on track
I pray that the new generation is not taught racism from the shameful closet racist.
MYSTERIOUSLY, MY ACCESS WAS DENIED -- THEREFORE I HAVE DELETED MY POSTS
From Minneapolis
Bravo!!
To Mr. Brian Hines
Mr. Hines,
Normally, I just read blogs, and leave people to their opinions; however Sir, your response to this blog prompted me to extend a response of my own. You seem to be very well versed in political matters, or at the very least politically well informed, and claim to be a "Patriot." I commend you, Sir. You seem to have "educated" us on past events of the former administration. Yet, you criticize Mr. Legend for taking a stance for the current administration, because it is now “his” President in office. Are we to assume that what the Post has done is acceptable to you, a Patriot, because it is not “your” President in office? Mr. Hines, let us not be naïve, as to think that the depiction of the chimpanzee is the Post’s ill attempt to characterize an “erratically out of control Congress who passed a trillion dollar spending” bill without much regard to its effect on the economy.
Listen, Mr. Hines, I know you maybe new to this hole “standing behind an intelligent black man, who just so happens to be President of these here United States” thing, but spear me the GOP rhetoric of saving America for true Americans speech, when we all know that as far as the GOP is concerned that the only true Americans are not Americans of Color. Let’s face it, Mr. Steele, although he maybe a good Republican Party member, only received the RNC Chair, because the GOP realized they really do need the African-American vote to win an election.
And Mr. Hines, if you are truly a Patriot, may I suggest instead of drinking a beer, and standing in the unemployment line, that you head to your nearest recruiter and join one of our beloved Military organizations. Don’t let age be a factor for you Mr. Hines, I hear they have allowed a 66 year old man to join the Navy as a Corpman, in place of his son who died in Iraq. Mr. Hines, before you make the inference that I should do the same, I did my bid for God and country (Iraq 2004-2005), and still serve.
It's not just one side of America taking a stand against this outrage, but all Patriots, Mr. Hines. I commend you Mr. Legend. Young Americans, like you Mr. Legend, are the future Patriots of this great Nation. Continue to stand and be heard.
Just 1 month in office, and people have the audacity to blame the current administration for something that has been going on for the past 8 YEARS! OH, save us all great GOP. Oh wait, you got us into this mess in the first place.
Really?
This is absolutely ridiculous. If John is really offended by this silly little cartoon, I just dont get it. As a black man, I do not find this offensive and if I am correct, President Obama did not write the stimulous bill, Nancy Pelosi and the rest of congress did. It is an absolute stretch to say the Post was making a racist comparison between a chimp and the president but I guess even though we have put a black man in the "white" house, we just can't get past the race baiting from the likes of Sharpton, Jackson and now Legend. Mr. Legend, I like your music but you are way off base on this one!
Your open letter to NY Post
Dear John Legend,
I am not particularly a fan of yours. While I am sure that you are talented and sincere, I just really have no interest in your entertainment efforts.
I also want to let you know that I am middle aged, middle class, white Southern Baptist family man. I live in rural North Georgia.
All that being said, I want to convey the following message to you regarding the open letter to the NY Post that you authored.
I felt that your letter was very sincere and poignant. The writing style, choice of vocabulary and sentence structure showed you had much forethought and understanding of the issue. I thought the sentiments you expressed were well delivered and fervent. I really felt your frustration and annoyance towards the newspaper.
I can not imagine what life experiences you may have had that caused you such passion, but it’s clear to me that you were sincerely hurt and angered by the published cartoon in question.
I wish you luck and I hope that you are able to make an impact and cause this sort of hurtful expression by the NY Post to cease once and for all.
Most Sincerely,
Greg
Your open letter
Your letter renewed my admiration for you.
I love the letter, although I wish it wasn't necessary.
NY Post ... Thanks John
When I first heard the story about the cartoon I was at work listening to The Tom Joyner morning show -- I quickly went online to see what the cartoon was before I made an opinion about it -- I was very hurt and saddened by it – CARTOONS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY – THERE IS NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT THAT CARTOON !!! -- it is a shame that in 2009 newspapers like the NY Post are still publishing filth, racism and hate – I thank you John for your letter. I have also sent in a letter of my own and will boycott the NY Post as well .
Kim
Let's be fair to all involved
Hey John,
How nice that you're standing up for civil discourse in the public arena.
For a moment, let's put aside the fact that the cartoon was clearly lampooning Congresscritters.
Since liberals have spent the last 8 years calling GWBush "McChimpy", and pasting his face
on the bodies of chimpanzees, and I know you want to be evenhanded about this ...
Please show us the letters you've written defending Bush against all this low-class,
vulgar ridicule and abuse, that is now being inherited by Obama.
----
Maybe one day all the race-obsessed people out there will stop viewing the whole world
through the lens of their racist mindset. That would be great, wouldn't it? Then they might
be able to look at a POLITICAL cartoon, and see the POLITICAL humor involved there.
You know, instead of them making up stupid fantastic racist stories about it.
P.S.The slimeball Al Sharpton is a racist Jew-hater and should be in jail for the Tawana Brawley affair.
You can just Google Tawana Brawley if you don't know who she is, or what happened then.
----
I Love John Legend
This is one of the many reasons I love John Legend. I too will be boycotting the NY Post!!
Well said, John
Thank you for speaking out against this very offensive cartoon. It seems your latest blog has brought quite a few new visitors to your site with many varying opinions, some of which are quite puzzling to me. I am Caucasian and from the South and, I agree, the meaning behind that disgusting Post cartoon was obvious and apparent and it sickens me. As an American, it embarrasses me to see the use of free speech perverted in such a manner.
Our President Obama deserves more respect than that. (Honestly, even if he was not our president he deserves more respect). Certainly, the press should hold him accountable to the people that elected him but this is definitely not an acceptable method of doing so.
I am glad you are boycotting the Post. Many artists today seem to spend more time being seen than being heard. I admire the involvement you have taken in politics and human rights issues, especially with the Show Me Campaign.
RE:
Coolbutts89 -- when did the notice go out that racism was dead? I didn't get it. But since you did, pass it on, because I'd really like to see that notice. So then I can take it to all the prisons across America. You know the ones where 12% of the population make up 64% of the inmates.
I'll also hand walk that notice to the ghettos and tell everyone they can live anywhere they want and no one will run from their neighborhoods from "fear".
And let's not forget about Corporate America. I'll post it in every CEO's office and ask them to give a copy to every member of their Management Team. I'm sure they'd love that-- to have to open the doors and be forced to compete with everyone for those prized management jobs.
Also. Taking a stand for the black community is NOT the same thing as thinking everyone is against the black community. That was actually not suprising to read that you think the two actually are one and the same. Sad, but not surprising. Your true lack of intelligence shines. It's okay. Ignorance is often bliss. To state that Dr. Martin Luther King would rather be depicted as a "dead monkey" rather than ACT to take a stand for the black community not only displays your lovely level of ignorance, but also (fortunately for the world) is the "superior" thinking mindset that got people like Dr. King to take action to begin with.
If everyone thought as you and sat on the sidelines and remained quiet about things that are: stereotypical, racist, intolerable, where would we be? We would still have "whites only", "colored only" fountains, buses, restaurants, churches, neighborhoods, schools.
And I have a strong feeling if those times still existed today, you would be the first one saying "everything's fine. Why are they wanting to come and sit at the counter with us? They have their own churches, restaurants, schools they can sit at, so they should just stop whining."
While that may not be in your heart, that's what your words say.
For a long time in this country, yes even today, images of black Americans have been determined, depicted and distributed by the media. I will not go into the history, you should educate yourself on it.
The challenge for you coolbutts89 is to listen three times as much as you talk. If you get nothing else out of life, I hope that lesson you earn and learn. Because if your first instinct is to think that taking a stand is whining, then your learning has only just begun. So for you...there's hope (we hope).
Right on John Legend. Thank you for taking a stand. True diversity doesn't start with an issue. It starts before the issue.
Keep bringing the truth in your words and music.
TO COOLBUTTS89- I AM TRULY SADDENED.....
by the content of your posts.....
On your first post-
Your ignorance was evident from the start. I really feel sorry for you. You are totally oblivious of the fact that your comments are racist. I implore you to print your comments and give the print-out to one of your African-American friends (or co-workers) without telling them that you wrote it. Have them read it and give you their opinion. I’m sure you’d be shocked to hear their response. Just for the record, I don’t follow anyone blindly. Like you, I stand behind everything I post. That is why I’m having a problem understanding why you and a few others have found it necessary to go through the trouble of signing up as a member of this website just to post on the blog page. Why has John’s letter offended you so? He is entitled to write whatever he likes, right?....Or is that entitlement only reserved for a privileged few?
On your second post-
Tisk tisk tisk....Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive! There you have it! It didn’t take very long for your true feelings to come to the surface. In his letter, John made no reference to civil rights. You may want to read it again. This time use your thesaurus and/or dictionary. The very fact that you made all of those comparisons and mentioned all of those things in your response to other bloggers’ comments proves that racism is very much alive in America today!! It’s alive, but it has been disguised! I’m sorry you’ve had such a hard time, I paid for my own education, my own car (I walked when I couldn’t afford gas), and I worked full time while carrying a full load of classes. Not one person on this blog has made any comment about anyone being white nor have they mentioned hating anyone. Hate, cracker nigger, spook, honkey...YOU introduced all of this in YOUR post. It seems that you have a lot of hostility for some reason. Your words are far more than just an angry response. It appears that you do have a deeper problem - denial. Could YOU be “whining” about being a victim of some form of racism yourself?...And to think, a few blogs earlier, you didn’t want us to “sweat the small stuff”... You should take your own advice.
Freddy & Greg
Yes, we know who Tawanna Bradley is and she's the one who lied. Not unlike hundreds of white women about black men. There was no reason to believe she was lying initially and Al Sharpton was able to focus attention on the situation to make sure justice would be served. I don't recall dozens of young white men being arrested and held without bail, wrongfully convicted and even put to death which has been the case with so many black men. This is not about Al Sharpton, it is about the lack of journalistic integrity of the Post. Calling President Bush a monkey suggested he wasn't intellectually bright, calling/inferring President Obama a monkey is definitely a racist slur. Those who get offended that others righfully so, get offended is what kills me. As if to say how dare we criticize the paper? As so many of you right wingers have pointed out, we do still have freedom of speech in this country. I think what some are so upset about is that John said it so well and he does know what he's talking about. It doesn't matter who wrote the Bill, the President signed it so the cartoon evoked the emotions the artist intended. Insult, anger, bitter resentment and hate.
And Greg, it's obvious you are not familiar with Mr Legend but what is so striking about your post is that you are so taken aback by his ability to write cohesively. He is not so much the exception as the media would have you believe. There are many educated, well read, accomplished Afican-American men who are capable of putting pen to paper to intelligently express a thought or idea. I'm sure you knew that but just chose to make it seem so unusual you had to compliment him. Yeah right.
Rhonda
TO Durango
I am well aware of the fact that President Obama did not write the bill. The idea that the cartoon had something to do with President Obama is derived from the fact that he signed the bill (you answered that question in your second sentence). If the bill does not result in economic recovery, President Obama, not all of the other members of congress who actually penned it, will be held accountable. That is where the connection is made.
As for your attempt to insult John’s intelligence, I think you should be asking yourself the question you posed to him. Your education system has obviously failed you. There are several misspelled words, grammatical errors, and misuse of punctuation in your comment. You also misspelled I-G-N-O-R-A-N-T.
BTW, nothing in John’s letter was ignorant, offensive, or racist. Please read it again.
TO carmandave
You are correct, you don’t get it. We know he didn’t write the bill. The mere fact that he signed it is enough to make the comparison. The President embodies the government. When it comes down to one person being responsible for the state of the nation, guess who it will be… President Obama. If this bill fails us, the public is not going to pick it apart to see who wrote what. They are going to blame the President.
I find it strange that you, as a black man, would chose “put a black man in the “white” house”. We did not “put” him anywhere. He was elected. And why did you find it necessary to place the word white in quotes? Think about it…Listen to your alarm and stop hitting that snooze button!!
Open Letter To The New York Post
There is only one thing that I can say about you. Stupid.
Agree to Disagree?
These type of discussions can be healthy for those of us who do not take to heart other views and opinions that we do not tend to agree with but I must say I have been following this conversation since last night and to see such a healthy dialogue go South speaks volumes of the culprit's character. There is no need to call anyone out personally, the gulity knows what emotions they've stirred by playing The Devil's Adovcate.
Well despite what we all may feel about Johnny's letter to the NY Post we should remember a few things:
1. Not one person's opinion is right or wrong; it's like an a**hole everybody has one.

2. Because not everyone is right or wrong and it is a matter of opinion sometimes you have to learn to agree to disagree. It's alright to voice your opinion in a civil way but then walk away knowing that you have stated your peace.
3. We need to divert our attention away from race relations in this country because truth be told we are one body of people... when the time comes (as it has) we'll all be suffering together regardless of our race, religious preference or economic status.
4. Hate breeds hate, but love dissolves indifference. Just because people choose be transparent and vicious in their posts does not mean we have to lower ourselves to thier level. We should somehow see their ignorance and lack of humane compassion as a sign of what is still needed to strenghten our bond as people... not just one race of people BUT all people!
5. We must always scratch the surface and dig deeper into all things offensive that we see, read or hear. Words are merely the smoke in the mirror grasping at our conscious thoughts, but until we are able elevate our hearts and minds beyond hatred, racism, sexism and all the other ISMs that keeps our minds in bondage we shall remain oblivious to ONE FACT... we are all God's children.
Love is Life,
ChicaWest
it's just a cartoon
The only people who felt offended by the cartoon are people who did not understand what the cartoon signified. It's purpose was to compare a chimp who was recently shot by his owner and the author of the stimulus bill. Perhaps it's point was that the stimulus bill is so bad it could've been written by chimps. All of you who thought it was racist are mistaken. Those who protest are simply showing their ignorance of the situation. Jumping to conclusions only reinforces the double standard that it is ok for african americans to poke fun at other races, while other races may not poke fun at african americans without repurcussion. A few questions which illustrate my point are. Why is there a "United Negro College Fund" but no Caucasian College Fund? Why is there B.E.T. television network but no W.E.T network? Why is it ok for black comedians & entertainers to stereotype & degrade other races but when a caucasion does it he is labeled a racist like Don Imus. If you are an african american and this cartoon offends you then perhaps you think other races see you as a monkey. Perhaps this fuels your hate towards people who you think hate you, but in reality are only drawing a cartoon.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Hi. I have never come on this site before. I am a fan of your music (but not a crazy fan if you know what I mean). I just wanted to thank you for sending this letter and stepping up. Some will be more difficult than others but it's worth a try. I also wanted to add that I frequently get bootleg CDs and download free music off the internet. I know it's wrong but it's a recession and I'm broke. But I will be saving up every cent I can to go buy your album. And of course I'll be spreading the word.
To The "Pride and Joy of Al Sharpton" person. You seem really detached.
1) In my opinion, someone who did not know anything about the event would have no idea that the cartoon was alluding to the event that took place in Fairfield Country, Connecticut. It almost looks like it's happening on some random street corner in the picture. People should be able to get the message the author of a political cartoon or any kind of satire is trying to portray. If he was alluding to that incident, then it would be pretty important that people recognize that fact so that it would add some lightness, humor or familiarity to the cartoon. So Sean Delanos is still stupid and should still be fired anyway because he can't do his job.
2) If you they were referring to a group of people, i.e. the members of Congress, or an institution, why did the author choose to represent a group of people with one animal? Why did the police officer refer to "someone else" instead of "some other people?"
3) When Bush was referred to as a monkey it was because people thought he was stupid. When people refer to black people as monkeys, you don't know whether they are saying it because they believe, like many white supremist, that black people are subhuman and savage, or if they are judging you as an idividual. Bush is a flunky. Have you forgotten the Bushisms? I won't list his accomplishments, but I'm sure you realize Obama's not stupid. It's one thing to say that you don't agree with someone's ideas, but don't you think it's taking it a bit far to attribute that same stupidity to Obama? Especially considering he's only been in office for how long? How long was Bush in office before people started openly calling him an idiot? This country has a history of racism that has to be accounted for. There are still white people who refer to black people, regardless of who they are as individuals, monkeys. Maybe you don't know them but I do. That's what people are angry about.
4) Nobody looks at John Legend as some kind of political leader. Your the only idiot on here expecting him to be some kind of political/economic expert. You don't have to be a politician to have an opinion about something. That's the whole point of a democracy doofus. He's voicing his opinion and people are appreciative because most artists do exactly what you are advising him to do, which is chuck and jive and keep quiet. He's a repected musician and someone people look up to as a human being. So if anything people will take after him in that they aren't afraid to speak up.
You act like this situation is soooo complex. A major publication allowed a political cartoon that offended a hefty chunk of its consumers to be printed. That's all. What is there to "understand about the government?" What is your problem?
Oh yea, and this:
"I don't see this cartoon having any overtones of racism, and any highly educated and intelligent African-American (including President Obama himself) can tell you that."
This comment is tacky and presumptuous. It's a sign of folly and immaturity. You need to get yourself together and learn how to interact with people. You may not see any overtones of racism, but obviously many people do.
For those who would like to learn more about the "COOLBUTTS89" world view ...
Just Google "coolbutts89".
A word of warning, however. If you want a full insight into this poster, you will have to subscribe to a disturbing site on the web that goes by the name of "Booty Fix Forum".
Stick to your drum kit until you grow up, Bill. You aren't smart enough by half to flame this sort of topic.
Touché!
I saw the cartoon...and to justify that it was to mean something else is a joke. Do these people not have their work checked? Whoever is doing the overseeing should be fired. Granted cartoonist's are supposed to make fun and exploit certain features of famous people but depicting weapons and violence in their cartoons is going a little far. Thanks for raising your voice on this issue John, it was very well done! ;o)
The post letter
I applaud you John Legend. I am a NY'er and I was truly disgusted with the racist cartoon and their flimsy apology. We ALL have to boycott, send them an email, protest, call, send letters, etc. Whatever it will take. Don't think this is a Black issue it is a human issue. We can not allow this to go on in the name of "free speech".
Never would have went to print
If the real incident with that monkey attacking women They would have never printed such a image in any context But it happened and the Ny Post made the cartoon knowing full well the effect it would have and they already knew that they could hide behind what happened in real life. This is so malicious and transparent To make matters worst they post a apology a 13 year old would write and on top of that insult the american readers by telling them they need to only see as a cartoon Where in the hell do they get off telling us how to form a opinion about what we see.I am for free speech but to come out with that apology tells me exactly where they stand and what their intent was.
MYSTERIOUSLY, MY ACCESS WAS DENIED -- THEREFORE I HAVE DELETED MY POSTS
Excellent and THANK YOU!
The NY POST is DEAD to me.
Thanks ludlowras for that handy list of advertisers.
A-
black to the future
There is a show on VH1 "called black to the future". Why isn't there a "white to the future" or any show celebrating strictly caucasion people? Why?,,, because black people would consider it segregation or racism and likely protest. I'm not complaining as I am neither black nor white. I am simply pointing out another double standard that black people frequently take advantage of.
MYSTERIOUSLY, MY ACCESS WAS DENIED -- THEREFORE I HAVE DELETED MY POSTS
New York Post
Mr. Legend - Thank you for using your voice to speak against the New York Post's racist cartoon. I have always admired you as an artist. Now, I respect you as a humanatarian.
NO MORE NEW YORK POST!!! YES WE CAN !!!
Most of the world are people of color and what The New York Post did is retarded AND UNFORGIVEABLE!! What the editors of the paper are really saying is that we ; are ALL apes?...NOT!! The New York Post should cease to exsist. as it is not a productive vehicle for information and non subjective opinions. With todays modern technologies, that's not a good thing. The Paper has messed up by exposing it's incompentancy by trying to attact their readers attention span and knowledge, like a jonkey on drugs...and by any means necessary!! ......Not good.,It's time to put this old horse out of it's misery!! ...........YES WE CAN!!!
John I hope you enjoyed the Grammys!
Kudos to You John Legend for your response to NY POST
Ohh, I love this! Go ahead John Legend with your intelligent self! It is time for White Americans to let go of a racist legacy that set the tone to define African Americans as nothing more than animals! We have been treated as such and Black Men have been called apes and baboons and other derogatory terms far too long, but there is nothing animalistic about African Americans. We are not the ones sleeping with chimpanzees, fine tuning the palettes of wild monkeys for the finer things in life such as drinking from a wine glass as was the case of the crazed chimpanzee that turned on its owner and her friend.
Thank you John for putting the New York Post on blast, and letting them know in no uncertain terms that the African American community will not embrace anyone who insist on depicting the first African American president, President Obama in unflattering characterizations such as the tasteless cartoon depicted in the NY Post; the audacity to imply that President Obama is a monkey!
The NY Post can try to hide behind satire, but African Americans are not fooled for we are well aware of the many disguises of racism, and for sure black men are all too familiar with looking down the barrel of a White policeman’s gun! In a time when many African American’s in NYC are still hurting over the senseless shooting death of Sean Bell by NYPD officers, the NY Post’s characterization of two cops with gun in hand, and implying that the monkey is President Obama, only poured salt into an already open wound.
We cannot continue to allow White Americans in high places to set the stage for brutalizing African Americans, but we must bridge solidarity within our communities to decry the racist antics of White Americans, specifically the White media that persists in trying to dehumanize through satire and the perpetuation of negative media images of our people. And for the record, though many in our society would have us to believe this, the maiming and killing of African American males by police officers that think that killing a black man is as normal as shooting down a deer in hunting season, is an assault on man/womankind! Unwarranted assassinations against Black men and women by the judicial system, and the unmerited character assassination of African American leaders by the media must become a thing of old.
I salute you John Legend for using your vocal chords to not only make beautiful music, but for challenging racism. You are a strong and courageous brother and I thank you for setting the stage for other African American men to take your example and stand up against racism.
Racist Intent
It is apparent that you are ignorant about the historical legacy of African Americans being labeled as monkeys and apes by plantation owners and throughout American history by those who had the power to re-write history and re-assign the culture and identity of Africans kidnapped by white landowners and brought to America for free labor. My people were dehumanized, not even thought significant to be included in the HUMAN RACE. Yes, we were historically called baboons and apes, and yes, historically black males have been killed unjustifiably by White police officers. So, yes, African Americans took offense to the NY Post's cartoon of two white officers discussing the stimulus package with gun in hand and implying that a chimpanzee had written the bill. First of all, we know a monkey is not running the nation, nor does a chimpanzee have the wherewithal to write legislation, so who else was the author of the cartoon making reference to, but President Obama?! Knowing that Black mles have often been called Apes and have historically been murdered by police officers, struck a chord of angst in the African American community.
Why do we have Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America? Because far too long African Americans could not gain access in predominately White colleges, and that is still the case today. Why did a Black man create B.E.T.? Well I am sure you can answer that yourself. Just sit down, flick on your TV and channel serf. Now ask yourself, how many persons of color did you see on any of those stations? How many persons of color did you see in any of those commercials. Now take a walk down mainstream America and go inside various companies and note how many persons you actually saw walking around those offices who were persons of color. Continue your walk down mainstream America, note the predominance of White Americans? Now when the Oscars come on television, note all the white faces in the audience. Note how many awards will be given to White actors and Actresses; and please don't say it's because there are few talented actors. Oh, and did you check out the Music Awards? There were Black musicians but the White musicians such as Justin Timberlake and the Jonas brothers actually dominated the original musician's music!! Justin Timberlake sang solo for the most part on Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" while Al Green practically sang backup to the song he's known for penning and singing! My point is, there is definitely a need for Blacks to create our own programming because if there was no BET there never would have been a Lil Wayne...or a John Legend. If there had been no HBCU's there would have never been a Martin Luther King. So before you get your drawers in a bunch, walk a day in my BLACK SKIN! Enuff said!!
thank you for standing up for what's right
I've never been to your site before (though I do own some of your albums, and you were great on Colbert's Christmas!) but came here from the blog field negro after he gave you a shout out for your letter to the NY Post. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write that letter.
Thank You
So, I saw the cartoon before I came across your response, and I was just as outraged. I , too, decided to write them a letter about how ignorant the cartoon was. When I saw that you wrote them, also, I was ecstatic. As a celebrity, you have a voice that can be heard above the rest. The cartoon was reprehensible and beyond the realms of any permissible joke.
I'm a seventeen years old, and I go to NYU, and you truly are my hero. Not only is your music amazing, but you are so intelligent, active, caring and compassionate and you inspire me.
Will it ever end?
I can't believe such things are still continuing after so many decades of suffering by black people. In the past they believed that we weren't good enough yet when we get a chance to show them what we are capable of they resort to mockery, death threats and all sorts of nasty things. BARACK OBAMA IS THERE TO GOVERN AND HE SHALL DO AS SUCH. He's not only a US President but the whole world looks up to him AND THEREFORE YOU THREATEN HIM YOU THREATEN THE WOLRD. We have endured a whole lot more than death threats that nothing fazes us anymore.
Respect to everyone who believes in a non-racial society.
On a lighter but serious note: John I found you even sexier after reading your posting. A man who stands up to something like this would definitely stand up for his woman.
DEAR HINES
Has it not occured to you that this time around someone felt it was about time something was said. Did it occur to you then that since you were aware of all those attacks on BLACKS AND WHITES you should have said something to show your dissapointment and contribute a positive message to America like someone has just done? Has it occured to you that John is not attacking white people but the person who invented the cartoon? I hope soon it will occur to you that your blog is nothing but utterly rubbish. It's fine if you don't get my message but please make it a point to get the one from Hollis (it's good free education for someone like you).
'with the last President not being "you're" President and this one being "you're" President' WHO IN HER SOBER MIND WOULD HAVE STOOD BEHIND THAT ADMINISTRATION/PRESIDENT ANYWAY.
You are only supposing you know the cartoonist's intent.
You are only supposing you know the intent of the cartoonist. Have we seen what the cartoonist has done before? Have we seen him do other cartoons that were racist? This is in line with political cartoon. Please don't jump up and down for the next four to eight years everytime something come out that you may not like. There are so many other causes that need attention and this subjective one doesn't even come close to one that should raise this level of protest. Let get upset about so many young black men walking around with their pants down and not being responsible. About them not having good jobs to support their families. This was a cartoon and until you can prove, other than feel it is racist, it is a cartoon. We, as blacks, can be sensitive to everything about blacks and then listen to joke about whites and think they are funny. I am black and have drunk at "Negro" fountains. I have seen racism at work and this cartoon is not the one to attack. There are too many other overt racist thing to deal with, not this subjective cartoon. To me it is a cartoon. It is not about Obama and nothing factual or inferred can link it to Obama. The "They" in "They will have to find someone else" is the only thing that could mean Obama and the Democrats will have to find someone to write any stimulus bill since the chimp who wrote it was dead. Let the joke be a joke and move on.
the blog about the post
Im quite bewildered by the fact that the post decided to issue an apology only saying sorry to those who may have been offened by the cartoon. At the bare minimum the post should have been saavy enough to recognize the the distasteful nature of the cartoon in the 1st place. I guess had that been the case we wouldnt have this blog, now would we?
the post has always played second fiddle to the Daily News any way.. i mean you usually buy the post because there are no more Daily News papers.. oh well.. i sure hope the Daily News decides to put more papers in curculation.. print.. print.. print... i guess when ur running a distant 2nd you try extra hard to catch up, sometimes you manage to make some big blunders in doing so and here is that HUGE blunder that will put them under..
Dvwright
No. How about you move on, and allow people to choose what battles they want to fight and you choose which ones you want to fight. Why does it bother you that others are choosing to speak out on the issue? Granted, no one can say with any certainty what was in the mind of the cartoonist but all can say that it offended them and you nor anyone else can tell anyone what should or shouldn't offend them. Good, you're not offended you don't have to respond to it but why bother joining a site to tell others what they need to do? This one issue, young men walking around with their pants hanging down is another.
Have we seen what the cartoonist has done before? Yes, we have, and it's hateful and cruel.
You can check out his previous work here.
Sean Delonas's cartoons often cross the line. That seems to be his intent. To suggest that his latest cartoon is only a harmless joke is to ignore all he's said and done in the past.
Well stated John!!
I wonder how much it cost for a page for a month in this newspaper? This letter should be placed there. i am with the boycott11
The Despicable Taste of Hate!
First, I’d like to say that I am proud of John Legend for taking a stand and identifying this cartoon as a form of disrespect not only to the President, but to black Americans as well. You know, many years ago racist behavior stood out, because it was exercised daily by the white race. Today it has calmed down where most of us do not make racism a part of our daily remembrance, which we may forget how evil some are until we stumble upon an article as such, and those memories resurface so fast like an arrow piercing at the speed of light. At times, I ashamed of our country and to be called an American, for the reason of there being people like this individual who call themselves Americans proudly exercising evil with the same hate blood surging through their veins, causing other countries to seize hatred for America. I hope that other people of stature jump on the “band-wagon” and join Mr. Legend in the boycott of the New York Post. It’s down right ridiculous that President Barack Obama has to consider his safety at all times, and take drastic measures to ensure his family’s safety, and to hate one because of the shade of his/her skin. This is a perfect example of ignorance, and it goes to show that America has not gotten past that stage. President Obama winning the presidential seat has rather heightened the altitude of hatred, which can be extremely lethal. What in the world is wrong with people (we’re talking about adults here)? Many hate this man because of his color, and nothing more. This is why hatred will forever soar, because we have these twisted adults teaching others to hate people because they’re not white. Now, how stupid is that? The devil is sure rearing its ugly head.

Thank You! I Have Hope In Our Future
Every since I had to pull over to the side of the road as I first heard you singing "Ordinary People", I have been a fan. My appreciation for you and your music took a giant leap when I read your response to the New York Post cartoon. I was soooooooooooo proud and grateful that you had the courage to speak out and to call upon others to take a stand. YES!!!!!! I am 57 and lived through the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's in Birmingham. I know the importance of the young picking up the social justice torch and carrying it to other generations. President Obama and First Lady Michelle and all of those across the generations who stood together and said in the words of Fannie Lou Hamer, "I am sick and tired of being sick and tired", share appreciation for you. Thank you for being a man of courage in an age when having faith and courage is absolutely necessary. Keep on keepin on! You and others like you are our future. Peace........................Essence Joi.
You Make Me Proud To Be A Fan!
Thank you soooo much, John, for putting your name and influence on the line and speaking out against this outrageous act. You are a true leader in the entertainment world and in the world period.! Your higher calling is calling you. Thanks for answering. Your grandfather would be proud!
Brilliantly Written
Thank you for your brilliantly written "Open Letter" to the New York Post!
I Love You John
I Love You Sooooo Much.

Have we seen what the cartoonist has done before? Yes, we have, and it's hateful and cruel.
Thanks for the link! In my opinion, the guy has a sick sort of mentality. I agree that he often crosses the line. I now think his work should be stopped, not because his work is racist, but it is unbecoming. I don't see how a public, "major" organization would even print those types of "cartoons." If we are "fair," we should protest all his cartoon and not just this one.
You are only supposing you know the cartoonist's intent.
I view a blog as a site for people to express their different views. I expect the views to be different. I don't look for everybody to agree with me because I don't always agree with others. I hope my reply did not offend you, it was only meant to say that a political cartoon is just that. After reading another reply to my post, I did look to see what other things the cartoonist has done. I now think that he is one sick person and I wonder about the institution that would publish his filth. This is the beauty of a blog, it provides so many points that can help one better understand what is going on. God' richest blessing to you..
You NAILED IT JOHN!!!!!!!
Thank you John for posting that article to the New York Post!!!! I am so tired of my so-called "friends" asking me, "why do you think the cartoon has anything to do with Obama??"....well John, you answered that - YOU NAILED IT!!!! I agree with everything you said 100%. The only thing i would add is that not only is that sick cartoon ignorant, racist and vile, it is also (and most importanly) DANGEROUS!!!!! As you mentioned, Obama has received numerous death threats and this idiot creates a cartoon that INCITES AND ENCOURAGES VIOLENCE AGAINST OUR PRESIDENT!!!! WHAT??????!!!!!! And if that weren't enough, The New York Post DID NOT APOLOGIZE. I hate it when someone does something terrible to someone and then they say (only after people complain) that they are "sorry if YOU were offended". WHAT??!! That is NOT AN APOLOGY. They are suppose to say they are sorry FOR WHAT THEY DID, not "IF" someone was offended. And even that wont be enough, they need to FIX THIS!!!! And they need to fire whichever irresponsible idiot created it, and the fool that apporved it. And even then I still am BOYCOTTING THE NEW YORK POST. I hope EVERYONE BOYCOTTS THEM. John, you ROCK for writing that article - I appreciate you so much - I am so sorry I never have bought your cd's but i dont' listen to that kind of music - i sure will now. Thank you John! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! VeniceBeachMom

Rupert Murdoch is a Media Mogul. He should know better!
Mr. Legend. Thank you immensely for so eloquently articulating what many enlightened people feel. Censorship discussion aside, the cartoon is just outright inappropriate and not befitting publications like the New York Post. On the assumption that the New York Post hires individuals who understand the impact that the press can have on its readers, I have to believe that the intent of this cartoon was to provoke controversy, foster racism, and encourage violence against the President. Intelligent journalists could have found so many creative and appropriate ways to satire the signing of the stimulus package without these negative implications and potential consequences. Of significance here, is the outright arrogance of the Post in not accepting responsibility or criticism for their actions. In addition, I am very disappointed in the US press for not taking a stand on this issue. Meanwhile, I am grateful to you, Mr. Legend and henceforth will purchase your music and support your creative endeavors as a matter of principle. I will be spending my money and giving my patronage where I think it is appreciated! Why is there B.E.T, United Negro College Fund, and a comment on Don Imus
First of all, if you want to hear a white comedian that does humor involving black people that would be Robin Williams. I haven't hear everything he has done but the times I have hear him there is a "respect" there in way he does what he does. I don't consider Don Imus a comedian and I haven't watched his show, but when it comes to white people having anything to do with black people there must be "respect" first and an appreciate of us as human beings. I don't approve of anyone disrespecting anyone and that goes for anybody! Sometimes those who make idiotic remarks want to deflect attention off of what they have said by pointing out what someone else has said, but that will not justify or excuse them for what they have said. Wrong is wrong and right is right!
Because of the History of this country involving white and black relationships we need to make one thing clear; that Caucasians have been the ones who created the race problem not blacks! I think it would be helpful for you if you were to study a little American and Black History! (Birth Of a Nation, Middle Passage, Slavery, Jim Crow, Lynching in America, Peonage, Sharecropping. discrimination in housing, jobs and wages)
But just in case you don't let me clue you in on a few things. Black People have among other things have been ridiculed for their physical features and disrespected throughout the history of this country. We have been lynched/murdered by mobs of whites just being accused of looking or whistling at a white woman (Google: Emmett Till) We have also had to start organizations to combat the oppression and segregation imposed on us by whites in this country in order to survive. Also, Whites have not cultivated the trust of Black People after such a long history of abuse and misuse! Black People have done nothing to deserve the mistreatment we have suffered in America and around the world. We have been hated upon because we are gifted and black!
I hope this will help you in some way understand the black experience a little better!
NY Post
Hello, and thanks for posting your comments.
But did you ever stop to think that every adjective that someone attempts to attach to Black Americans may be an attempt to get Black Americans to react and confirm that maybe the adjective really to describe Black Americans. Black Americans are a people of many shades and of great strength. We are highly intelligent, creators of temples and kingdoms. rulers, kings, leaders, and providers. We are not just articulate; anybody can give a speech. But We are more than just what other people say who we are. I know whose I belong to and who I am. GOD is my creator and he made me in his image; marvelously made (that's in the BIBLE).
Charles Darwin believe that man originated from Ape and than develop into this two leg-person who went on to create this World that we now live in. If Charles Darwin is correct and Black American are of a chimp, than that proves my theory, Black Americans are creators. Let us not allow others to tell us who we are like. We are GOD's children and Jesus' siblings. Jesus is no Chimp and Our FATHER is no CHIMP. Stop feeding into their stereotype. You for one should know better.
I am from New York and the New York Post has a history of writing and publishing trash. It is not a newspaper it is like the Star magazine, TMZ, and any other non-factual trash. Lets do what other races and religious groups do to change the behavior of others that attempt to disgrace who we are as a people and race. Stop buy their trash until they respect us. Martin L. King did it to Alabama, Ghandi did it to India, Blacks and others did it to South Africa until Mandela was free. Lets be smarter than them.
That comic had nothing to do with Obama
That comic had nothing to do with Obama. You're all paranoid schizophrenics
Your Open Letter!
Bro. John,
It's a shame that people choose to follow the way of ignorance to try and arouse the sensitive side of a people's consciousness by trying to direct some form of attention towards their position in which they stand and probally will always stand. Who in their right mind did not see that this image that was published is despicable? What the hell was the artist thinking? Was he asked to draw this? I think yes! There is a conspiracy and it has always been! It's time to tell the world that ANYONE who disrepects our dignity, integritity, and our nationality along with our struggles as a peole that has caused many to benefit will not be tolerated and we shall address it.
I applaud you for not only being an artist but showing as an AMERICAN ARTIST who is black, that you will not tolerate this type of blatant foolishness.
Right on!
Your Open Letter to the NY Post
Dear Mr. Legend:
A friend of mine in the US has just forwarded me your open letter to the NY Post. I'd like to take a moment and extend my gratitude - applauding you for taking a stand against such publishing. Your letter is well written in its contents and format and I can hardly picture anyone who could have expressed our like-minded view better. Particularly, since you are an high-profile artist in the entertainment business I know voicing one's opinion can come very pricely. THANK YOU for setting a standard and living by 'what prospers a man to gain the whole world and loose his soul'.
May the Lord's favor rest on you & bless you in all your doings!

Post-Script / It Never Goes Away
5 days after the last poster posted on the subject, I give you this, an interesting article whose contents convey that the subject never goes away:

I'm not telling you what to do, or what to think. I am merely expressing my views on a blog. So why is it that you tell me to toddle down to blockbuster as if you had a right to tell people what to do? Good, bad, racist, funny, unfunny, despicable, offensive, crude, smart, etc....it's just a cartoon. Get over it. I don't need any music or reading tips, but if you could send me a list of black shows and/or black movies that are black oriented I would appreciate it. Perhaps the fact that you believe that all but one month out of the year are dedicated to white history, and that 'Snow White' is a caucasian film (spellchecker is for grey people also) convince me that you are quicker to hate, than those who you accuse of prejudice or racism. Please,, say what you want but don't tell people what to do.

The Best Revenge for Any Artist...
...create a work of art depicting your anger and disgust with this worldwide issue. Use your creative weapons.
Art records history. It makes people remember the event. And it can also perpetuate change. (and the perpetrators irresponsible actions and names are forever recorded in history). You are an artist with the power of song and video to get your point across. Picasso did it when he painted "Guernica"and the awful horrors of the Spanish Civil War. The turmoil of the 70's was recorded by Edwin Starr "War" and Tempations "Ball of Confusion." New York Magazine (think we forgot) that racist cover of Obama and his wife Michelle on their cover. New York Post and their cartoonist Sean Delonas with the irresponsible and racist New York Post editors...will go down in history as the Bull Connors of the new millenium.
Believe me---
Years from now museum curators will be collecting items for exhibits about racism during this Obama era. Your song will be one playing in the museum exposing the racism. Looking forward to listening to your "Guernica" and discussing it in my lecture classes...
Your letter is a great start.

Surprised
I thought this kind of stuff in American was long oeverdated...
Putting up something like that is really shallow.
Thanks for speaking up
MYSTERIOUSLY, MY ACCESS WAS DENIED -- THEREFORE I HAVE DELETED MY POSTS
Perhaps Hotahandel, coolbutts89 & Kmar are in caoots
Actually Web, Hothandel told us all to get over it in his/her very first post. So who's trying to tell others what to do? Yeah, it's crazy. I wonder how long will this blog garner people's attention enough to join the site just to post something arbitrary. Why don't they really join and post their pics, letting us know who they are and what city and state they reside in. You see when Coolbutts was called out he ran and hid like the child he is, possibly resurfacing as Kmar.
What's with the third person?
Why do you refer to yourself in the third person? Talk about silly. Anyway this cartoon topic is old and tired and I have new topics to blog about. I appreciate everybody's responses and have had much fun debating with all of you. Feel free to post comments accusing me of running away, but the truth is I have a life which does not allow time to pursue every response whether foolish or intelligent. I leave you all with this comment: My name is Alejandro Wilkens. My father is Black My mother is Mexican and my grandfather (her father) is German. One year & six months ago I married my love Katherine who is Polish. I think that eventually, over centuries all races will melt into one beautifull race. Interracial marriages are now the norm, and why not?. People should laugh at their stereotypes, and see the little bit of truthful humor in previously racist comments. Mexicans eat beans, African Americans eat chicken, and Germans love sour kraut. Polish people....well I'll keep quiet about them 'less I wanna sleep on the couch. My point is being overly defensive is a form of hate. The only people who should be segregated are those who still believe in the crede that people should stick with their own kind. In this category fall people of every race. The day when we can all laugh at our differences and still prosper will truely be the day mankind reaches the promised land.
Thank you,
Alex
On Rhonda's observations ...
You raise a very interesting issue, Rhonda; something I have been pondering since discovering this site a week or so ago.
Like many people, I was shocked by the publication of the "chimp cartoon" and browsed several news sites for a discussion of the topic. Within an hour, it was clear to me that John Legend's take on the subject was the most coherent -- and definitely aligned with my view -- so I decided to visit the source of Mr. Legend's open letter to the NY Post. Discovering that he was hosting a blog on the topic was certainly the bonus.
What I found curious, initially, was the evidence of racism among a few of the posters. Why, I wondered, would a racist bigot be attracted to a blog topic that is dedicated to condemning the poor judgement exercised by the NY Post in publishing a racially charged cartoon? Why would people with racist views not be posting on blogs that promote their views, since there is no shortage of web sites dedicated to bigots and racists?
An answer dawned on me, as follows:
Notionally, the general population of racists in America can be divided into 2 groups:
Conscious/Aggressive Racists: Those who hold racist views and freely admit that they are racists. This is the minority of racists. This is the group that tend to join hate groups like the KKK.
Unconscious/Passive Racists: Those who hold racist views but are largely in a state of self-denial. This is the majority of racists. This is the group that attempt to rationalize their racist views by "explaining" them to themselves (and others) through tortured and convoluted logic. The number one red herring argument for this group is ... "freedom of speech". I believe this is by far the most dangerous category of racist -- the ones who hide in plain sight and comfortably spread their poisonous views under apparently respectable banners.
So, that's my take on those who show up as thinly disguised racists on this blog. They are of the unconscious/passive racist group. They are drawn to a site like this -- to practice their explanations for their racist views; apostles of hate, in a sense. A conscious/aggressive racist has no need to do that -- they carry their racism like a badge of honour and gravitate to forums where they can commune with others of their kind; the high priests of hate, in a sense.

PS: Note that I am not saying that all of the posts on this blog are, or need to be, in full support of John's views on the subject. There have been a number of interesting underlying topics explored -- such as the possible relevance of the cartoonist's intent, hyper sensitivity to symbolic imagery, etc. I am only referring to the posts that are so clearly the tortured product of racist views -- and I applaud Mr. Legend for his diligence in regularly purging them from the blog comment section; with "coolbutts89" being the best case in point.
BLESS YOU JOHN LEGEND
Mr. Legend we should all PRAISE you in your response to the NY post depiction of the racist, degrading and obscene cartoon that was allowed to be published referring to President Barack Obama. Although many try to ignore that racism still exists in this world, the article clearly brings to our attention the ignorance and bigotry of some of society's worst publicist. Which unfortunately reflects pure out & out bigotry that people of color have to deal with each & every day. With all due respect, when I speak of people of COLOR, I am truly referring to the W people. Again, my family and I praise you for your extraordinary response and May God Bless you & your family Always!!!!!!
